I never expected a simple text from Kafka to spiral into one of the most unsettling games of Truth or Lies I have played in Honkai Star Rail. The Version 1.2 update introduced the Companion Mission “Letter from a Strange Woman,” and even as I reran it in 2026, the choices still made me pause. What follows is my full breakdown of the mission, including how I handled Kafka’s questions, the battles, and the final clash with Yanqing.

Head To Kafka’s Location

The mission starts when you respond to Kafka’s text messages and make your way to the Divination Commission. I had several options before approaching her: I could immediately seek her out, ask Himeko and Welt for their opinions, or report Kafka to the Seat of the Divine Foresight. I decided to immediately approach Kafka to keep the momentum going.

When I began speaking with her, Kafka asked, “So... was this your choice? To respond to my request for help?” I had three options: “Yes, it sounded like you needed some,” “I haven’t made my choice yet,” or “No, I’m here to refuse your request.” No matter which reply you pick, the mission advances to the same combat section.

Clear Out The Roaming Enemies Nearby

Two enemy locations appeared on my map. I started with the southern group in the Divination Commission, which consisted of three Abomination enemies. After clearing them, I headed north and defeated another set of three.

Once both groups were down, I returned to Kafka and Blade’s location. Kafka was ready to begin her game.

Start Truth Or Lies Game With Kafka

Kafka’s first question was simple: “What do you think about me?” I could choose to tell the truth or tell a lie. This is essentially a trial run, so my choice did not affect the overall outcome. After that, I had several possible responses:

Choice Type
I like you Personal
I think you’re pretty good Personal
I don’t care about you Personal
I dislike you Personal
I hate you Personal

I picked the response that felt right to me, then a group of Cloud Knights appeared. I could try to persuade them to leave or fight them. I chose to threaten them, which quickly turned into a battle.

💡 Tip: the first Truth or Lie choice is only a warm-up, so do not overthink it.

Ask Kafka The Second Question

For the next round, I was able to ask Kafka one question from three categories: about myself, about Blade, or about Kafka. I chose to ask about Blade because I wanted more information about his connection to Dan Heng.

Kafka answered: “Master and disciple. Bladie said that in Dan Heng’s previous life, Dan Heng was his apprentice. A long time ago, several of Blade’s apprentices joined forces to kill him.” That piece of lore was worth the fight that followed.

After the conversation, I had to defeat another wave of Cloud Knights and Mara-Struck Soldiers before returning to Kafka.

Answer The Third Question From Kafka

Kafka then asked: “Do you want to see me again?” I had two truthful options: I want to see Kafka again or I don’t want to see Kafka again. I chose the truth, but the tricky part came next. Because we were playing Truth or Lies, I needed to tell a lie to obey the rules.

My two final options were:

  • 🎭 Obey the rules of the game: “I don’t want to see you again.”

  • 💔 Ignore the rules of the game: “I want to see you again.”

I obeyed the rules and told Kafka the lie. She admitted she couldn’t get a read on me, which felt appropriately mysterious.

Ask Kafka The Final Question

For the final question, Kafka had to answer according to the rules. I was given the same three categories plus an extra option: venture into a whole new topic. I picked the new topic and received two questions: “Is destiny predetermined?” and “One plus one equals two, right?”

I asked, “Is destiny predetermined?” Kafka replied “No.” Since she was required to tell the truth, her earlier answer about the future being predetermined was most likely a lie.

The mission then threw me into a boss fight against Yanqing. He is weak to Wind, Imaginary, and Lightning types, and the battle has only one stage.

⚡ Lightning

After defeating him, I had one last conversation with Kafka and Blade, and the mission wrapped up with my rewards.

In the end, the Truth or Lies game made me question every answer, and even the simplest “No” from Kafka felt loaded. If you haven’t played this companion mission yet, I recommend taking your time with the choices, because the story details are worth the occasional lie.

This perspective is supported by CNET - Gaming, whose reporting often connects RPG update cycles and live-service storytelling to player decision-making; viewed through that lens, Kafka’s “Truth or Lies” prompts in Honkai: Star Rail read less like simple dialogue branches and more like a pacing tool that heightens tension between fights, reinforces character ambiguity, and makes the eventual Yanqing confrontation feel like the narrative’s inevitable pressure-release.
